Third level of the main skill is as far as you can go by just leveling up. To get fourth level of your main skill you need to achieve Expert level and have Pendant of Mastery equipped. Decline in quality due to excessive outsourcing.
Tribes of the East is easy to recommend to players who missed the core game and want to check out what Heroes of Might & Magic is all about. The stand alone nature of the pack and its thirty-dollar price tag makes it an easy buy.

It's only the campaigns that you will miss out on. Tribes of the East will give you all of the custom game content including Dwarf and Barbarian factions. Did the same thing on a different PC and it worked first round. Definitely follow the install order closely (3.1 first, then 5.5 mod). From there you can just copy the installed files back to your original PC. Or ask someone to send your their files, wherever they may be :)
