Regardless, TT Games has confirmed several times over that it will have "local split-screen multiplayer co-op without online multiplayer functionality". To add to that, technically you can play the game online co-op using Remote Play Together on Steam. Or Parsec.

It has been confirmed by the developers that the game will only have local split-screen functionality so it is highly likely that the game will remain to have this feature instead of adding any Online Multiplayer on top of the split-screen.
